This is a set of presentations that are submitted by the community for the dissemination of knowledge. Each presentation includes a way to contact the author so that you can ask them questions or seek permission to use content from their slides.

When you are logged in a as a Member, a Submit File icon will be displayed in the bar above, beside the Search Document icon. You can use the Submit file icon to upload your presentation and write a quick introduction to the presentation. We will convert the file if needed and publish it on the website. Please use either Power Point or PDF format when uploading the files.

This is a fantastic way to give back to the community and to get a little more mileage from the presentation that you have worked hours on and presented at a conference.

first slide of Mechanical Testing of Thin FilmsThin film mechanical properties of elastic modulus and hardness can be difficult to obtain using nanoindentation due to substrate influences. This presentation covers the development of a test algorithm used to measure the substrate independent properties of low-k films on silicon substrates. The techniques used for development can be applied to many film-substrate systems.

AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE VISCOELASTIC PROPERTIES OF SMALL VOLUMES OF MATERIALWhat we’re after:
  • Constitutive behavior of small volumes of viscoelastic solids subjected time varying excitation over as wide a range of time or frequency as possible.
  • Extend the applicability of nanoindentation to time-dependent behavior
  • Flat punch indentation, complex test geometry
  • DMA, triple clamp fixture, complex geometry
  • Simple test geometry, uniaxial compression
  • Material’s response in the frequency domain - short time
  • Material’s response in the time domain - long time
  • Bringing them together
  • Do it all with flat punch indentation
  • Material selection: Highly plasticized PVC

scratch_testing_of_ultra_thin_filmsThis presentation examines the tip radii effects on the scratch testing of ultra-thin films. All of the samples tested are low-k films on silicon substrates and detailed failure is shown for each sample. Finally, the results from a process for generating scratch tips with reproducible apex geometries and scratch responses are shown.

Low_modulus_standards This presentation examines the use of polycarbonate as a low modulus reference material for nanoindentation and examines one case of using the reference material to identify differences in test techniques that are not identified when testing fused silica or any other stiff reference material. The information was presented at MRS-Boston in fall 2011.
